Submission Guidelines

Provocateur is published biannually. Winter submissions will be accepted from October through January (for a February/March release) and Summer submissions will be accepted from March through June (for an August/September release). Anything submitted during the months of July, August or September will not be considered.  

-Provocateur seeks both (previously) published and unpublished work created by members ofthe LGBTQ community and its allies*. 
(*By “allies,” we mean writers and artists, though not members of the LGBTQ community, seek to support and advocate for equal rights and fair treatment of LGBTQ people.)

-We will consider simultaneous submissions, but if your work is accepted elsewhere, please inform us immediately.  

-Provocateur acquires First North American Serial Rights. Rights revert to the author upon publication as long as Provocateur is credited as the place of first publication.    

​-Provocateur reserves the right to make minor copy editing changes to submitted works. Significant editorial changes will require author’s approval prior to the magazine’s publication.  
​-Payment is in the form of a copy of the magazine in which your work appears. There is an author discount for additional purchased copies.


We are seeking Fiction, Poetry, Creative Non-Fiction and Visual Artwork.

Please submit your work in a format that is compatible with Microsoft Word (rtf, doc, docx) You may include a cover letter, but a short bio is sufficient.


- You may send up to 5 poems at a time, not exceeding 10 pages.


- You may submit only one prose piece per issue, not exceeding 10,000 words.

- Please make sure the piece is double-spaced with numbered pages.

Creative Nonfiction

- You may submit one of the following: personal essay, memoir, profile, or other nonfiction pieces not exceeding 10,000 words.

- Please make sure the piece is double-spaced with numbered pages.

Visual Art

- You may submit an unlimited number of the following forms of artwork: photography, sketches, paintings, and digital media.  Please make sure they are all in JPEG or PDF form.
